I woke up on Christmas excited to share my favorite holiday with my Momo followers but when I opened the app I discovered this, which said I had been shut down and was not allowed to live stream. WHAT???!!!
I looked through my messages and found this vague notification from the app which stated that I was shut down for 3 days due to a foreign internet router issue.
I reached out to my agent who contacted a Momo employee who explained the situation a bit more. Turns out that I was being temporarily shut down because my IP address showed that I was live streaming from outside of China. If this happens, Momo is supposed to report me to a governmental bureau who will essentially check my account and make sure my content is OK. Although I had already been streaming in the US for almost a month, nobody had reported me, so when the fore mentioned bureau found out, I had to be shut down for three days while they went through the reporting process.
After three days I was able to live stream again, which I was very happy about. However, it was really bad timing because my audience had been looking forward to Christmas, aaand I lost out on three days of income, but honestly things could have been much worse. At least I wasn’t shut down for good.
What really scared me though was that my entire audience is on that platform. If I get banned from Momo, then I’ve lost access to my audience of almost 300,000 people and to my entire source of income. I’ve been saying for months that I need to start growing an audience on other platforms and this was the final straw.
Since coming back to China I have kicked myself into overdrive and fortunately everything seems to be falling into place.
I was reading through my messages on Momo (which I rarely do because there are too many of them) and I happened to see an offer from an agency associated with the Huajiao app to start working with them. Huajiao is one of the big live streaming apps and they have a really good earnings ratio so I jumped on it! Working with an agency is often better than working alone because they help promote you and help you grow more quickly.
About a day later I was up and running on Huajiao and now after live streaming on there for 11 days I have 1,950 followers and I’ve earned 1,811 rmb ($263 USD). The agents have been actively sharing my live stream which helped me to attract an audience right away. In the past, when I did Huajiao on my own I only received about 200 views/hour. Now I have been receiving 4,000-5,000 views/hour. What has helped even more is that I have been promoted several times on the front page of the Huajiao app, which definitely draws in more viewers.
Around the same time, I also decided I want to grow a following on another popular live streaming app, Yizhibo. While it’s a bit more difficult to earn money right away through this app, Yizhibo is important because it has huge potential for insanely high viewer numbers. Why? Well 1) the app has a massive number of users (a reported 7.73 million active users a day) and, 2) this app it is directly connected to Weibo, meaning that Weibo users who browse through the “live” page on Weibo can see what is currently live streaming of Yizhibo. Therefore, your live stream is being put in front of Weibo’s 120 million daily users as well.
With those kinds of user numbers, it’s no surprise that right away I started receiving high viewer numbers. By my 5th day using the app I had 81,000 viewers for a 1 hour and 20-minute live stream, with the highest number of simultaneous viewers reaching 7,512. By my 9th day on the app, I had 317,000 views for a 1 hour and 35-minute live stream with the highest number of simultaneous viewers reaching 24,000. Yep, you read correctly. 24 thousand people were watching me all at the same time. Kind blows your mind huh?!
On top of that, in 14 days I have gotten 4,446 followers, which seems small compared to viewer numbers but I’m sure it will continue to grow rapidly. On my third day of streaming on Yizhibo I had an agency reach out to me and now I’m working with them as well. Besides helping you earn more followers, agencies can also help you get a larger cut of your earnings and if you reach certain earnings goals each month they will give you bonuses.
It’s exciting to see what has developed over the week and a half that I have been back. There is massive potential on both of these apps and I fully believe that I can grow followings on both of them that are just as large, if not larger, than my current following on Momo. Spreading myself out on three apps has made me feel much more secure than before, when I was only on one. It’s definitely been tiring and requires a larger time commitment, but I feel it is totally worth it. I’m really looking forward to seeing what will happen on these apps over the next couple of months.
